Children have very small mouths. This means that undergoing traditional dental x-rays can be difficult for them. Additionally, children may have a gag reflex, making performing x-rays even more challenging.
At Midlothian Children’s Dentistry, Dr. Patel and our team use special gag-free dental x-rays that do not elicit such a reflex in younger patients. Instead, patients get the x-rays they need without any physical discomfort. Their experience is improved and our ability to treat them is enhanced.
request an appointmentIn general, children will need x-rays more frequently than adults because their mouths are growing and changing rapidly. Children are also at higher risk of tooth decay than adults. Because of this, the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends x-rays every six months for children with higher risk of decay, and less frequently for those with lower risk.
Our advanced digital x-rays use about ¼ of the radiation of traditional dental x-rays. These digital scans can magnify and enhance your children’s teeth for better diagnosis of dental diseases or problems. With digital x-rays, we are able to use a number of tools that will allow us to take a closer look at the teeth and surrounding structures with remarkable accuracy. Dr. Patel can examine small areas of decay between teeth and under existing fillings. Also, our digital x-ray can help detect bone loss due to periodontal disease, dental infections and abscesses.
Our team has invested in training and technology to make diagnosis and treatment as accurate and comfortable as possible. For more information about our digital x-rays, please contact our Pediatric Dentist in Midlothian.
